  • Biostatistician/Bioinformatician position in Toulouse, France

A 1 year (2 years with extension) postdoctoral position is open in the Obesity Research Unit of the I2MC in Toulouse, France. The position is aimed at a computational biologist, with an emphasis on biostatistics, capable of discovering biologically relevant hypotheses from a large collection of ‘omics and clinical data obtained from human samples. All data have been acquired and processed by our bioinformatician. The next step in the project is to apply statistical methods on the combined set of data to find signatures in the ‘omics data that directly relate to the clinical parameters of the sample donors.

We have obtained data using microarrays, RNA-Seq, high-throughput RT-qPCR and lipidomics from human samples with clinical parameters for each individual. The biological project is to investigate changes in adipose gene expression in extreme responders to weight reducing diets. The computational aspect of the project remains to be defined by the candidate, but should essentially allow the biologists to formulate hypotheses about which clinical parameters are useful and thus significantly correlate with the underlying molecular signatures obtained from the ‘omics techniques. Potential methods to obtain desired results include Network Analysis, sPLS, Random Forests, but of course we are open to suggestions.

The INSERM is the only French public research institute that is completely focused on human health. (http://english.inserm.fr). The Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases Institute, I2MC in French, is a center of 13 different research teams located in Toulouse (http://www.i2mc.inserm.fr). The Obesity Research Unit participates with the EMIF-IMI framework (http://www.imi.europa.eu/content/emif).

    Requirements:
    • PhD in relevant discipline such as computer science, molecular biology, biostatistics, mathematics or bioinformatics and real life experience analyzing data from high throughput technologies.
    • Excellent programming/data analysis skills (preferably in R).
    • Familiarity with the fundamentals of molecular biology and willing to learn about biological concepts related to obesity and human health.
    • Enthusiasm and independence as well as the ability to work with others from different disciplines (biology, computation, mathematics/statistics).
    • Must be able to read, speak and write in the English language.

Preference will be shown to candidates that also have experience with transSMART, eTRIKS.

    Start Date: Available immediately.
Salary Range: 2000 - 2500 euros/month depending on the candidate.
To apply, please send cover letter, list of publications and CV to: [email protected]

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
