  • PhD computational biologist

A computational biologist position is immediately available at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The Genomic Functional Analysis Group is interested in integrating multidimensional data to decipher disrupted gene regulatory mechanisms and identify causal variants of disease. In particular, the group is assessing RNA-seq data from deep sequencing using paired end reads, to detect RNA-splicing alterations and impact of epigenetic modifications.

Successful candidates will undertake exciting projects in the general areas of Computational Biology, Functional Genomics, Epigenomics, and/or Systems Biology as they relate to the sequence and expression patterns found in a collection of tumor samples. The lab specializes in developing new technologies in experimental and computational data analysis, providing a well-rounded and extremely competitive training environment.
Attendance at international meetings, career development and professional networking are emphasized. The NIH Intramural program provides an exceptional scientific atmosphere with potential for accelerated advancement and superior scientific interactions.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have obtained a PhD degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biophysics or a related discipline. US citizenship is strongly recommended. Programming skills and experience in the application of computational methods to high-throughput genomic data are highly desirable. Excellent communications skills and the ability to work on a variety of projects are essential. Applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in manuscript writing and public speaking.

LOCATION: NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland or Twinbrook campus in Rockville, MD.

SALARY/BENEFITS: Successful candidates will be offered competitive stipend/salary commensurate with number of years of postdoctoral experience and accomplishments.

      Dear Brian-

No, it's a position in the same branch as the advertised position (Genome Technology), but not restricted to a post-doc position, and with a different investigator.
Dr. Laura Elnitski is a senior investigator in the Translational and Functional Genomics Branch at the National Human Genome Research Institute.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
        by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

        Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
        by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
