    Bioinformatics Scientist

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is ranked as one of America’s best hospitals for children by U.S. News & World Report and Parents Magazine.

The Bioinformatics Scientist will provide overall leadership and accountability for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Bioinformatics Support Program. This key role will work closely with individual clinical and research laboratories to identify bioinformatics needs. The successful candidate will be able to interface with both the IT and bioinformatics groups at CHOP and UPENN to address software and hardware problems in the laboratories. An immediate goal is the development of a genomic data workflow as the labs move toward integration of next generation sequencing into the clinical diagnostic arena. There will be opportunities for participation in research and possible academic appointment for a suitably motivated individual.

    Job Responsibilities:
    • Advice on the appropriate hardware and software solution for a given research or clinical project. Identify and apply appropriate analytical procedures.
    • Develop and/or implement statistical, informatics and computational methodologies for genetic analysis. NGS data analysis and software development for research and clinical diagnostics. SNP and expression array analysis.
    • Create and manage laboratory databases. Integrate relevant laboratory databases with other institutional datasets and systems. Develop Biobanking informatics and connectivity to other institutional databases.
    • Assure the efficient and effective clinical operations, the proper prioritization of different projects and the availability of required resources.
    • Coordinate with internal groups within CHOP and the Department of Pathology, including IS, clinical and research laboratories and other cores.

It is anticipated that the scientist will assist in assembling a team to address these needs over time.

Requirements include a Ph.D. and at least three years of experience. Additional requirements include advanced mathematical and computer skills combined with in-depth knowledge of biological science. Strong programming skills in R and/or SAS, C/C++, Perl, SQL, PHP, Java, and HTML required. Project management experience strongly desired.

Our organization offers total compensation packages befitting a world class institution. Apply online at http://jobs.chop.edu, referencing Requisition 11-23738.

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
