  • Teaching Asst Professor - Quantitative Biology – West Virginia University, Department

    Description
    The Department of Biology at West Virginia University (https://biology.wvu.edu/) invites applications for Teaching Assistant Professor of Quantitative Biology beginning August 2021. This is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure-track position with full benefits and the opportunity for promotion, though promotion is not required for continued career stability. Teaching Assistant Professor appointments to have renewable terms of up to three years, with no limit on the number of terms. Teaching faculty are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching and ongoing engagement in assessment-based advancement of curriculum and instruction. This is a non-research position.

    The teaching assignment is four courses each semester, or equivalent. Common equivalents consist of significant commitments in support of student development (e.g., advising and recruitment) or in support of instruction. The successful candidate will teach foundational as well as advanced undergraduate biology courses such as Principles of Biology, Introduction to Physiology, and Biometry. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a new focus of our curriculum in quantitative biology by developing and teaching courses that complement those currently being taught within our major (e.g., Bioinformatics, Genomics, Predicting and Tracking Pandemics, Ecology in the Era of Big Data, Computational Neuroscience). The content of such courses will include the basic statistical and computational tools required for data collection, processing and analysis in the biological sciences. The successful candidate will also contribute to advising and recruitment; advising during the summer may be expected, with additional compensation.

    Qualifications
    A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Biology or a closely related field is required at time of employment. In addition, we seek evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching undergraduate students, including in courses emphasizing quantitative skills; in developing new courses; in developing, implementing and assessing innovative recruitment and advising initiatives; as well as excellent written and oral communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
