The BIOINFORMATICS SCIENTIST in the Broad Institute Genome Research and Analysis group will support our collaborative genome research efforts. The individual will apply bioinformatics techniques to genome sequence, annotation, and related data to gain insights into the biology and evolution of diverse organisms with an emphasis on comparative bacterial genomics. Will evaluate existing bioinformatics software tools and prototype new software tools and algorithms to enhance our analysis capabilities. Will develop and contribute to scientific manuscripts related to genome analyses.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful applicant will analyze (mostly microbial) genome sequences to gain insights into the biology and evolution of organisms, including genome organization, metabolic potential, gene evolution, genetic basis of pathogenicity, and features that correlate with the evolution of phenotypic traits related to known physiology or infectious disease. Will perform timely and accurate bioinformatic analysis, aid researchers in performing computational analysis, and participate in and contribute to a dynamic scientific community. Duties include support, maintenance and documentation of shared tools, code base, and data sets for computational analysis; work with researchers to define and implement bioinformatics analysis tools; interact with external collaborators; prepare analytical results for presentation in various contexts including group meetings, funding agency reports, and journal publications; and perform related tasks as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology, or a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology with a strong computational background. Wide experience in computational sequence analysis spanning gene discovery, gene expression, genome annotation, sequence alignment, homology detection, and phylogenetics. Scientific achievement demonstrated by journal publications, preferably with a focus on bacterial or microbial genomics. Demonstrated proficiency in Perl or Python programming in a Linux environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to perform both self-directed and guided research. Excellent collaborative skills and unrelenting enthusiasm for genomic science.
