  • PacBio SMRT Informatics Developers Conference - September 14 in MD

Registration is now open for our SMRT® Informatics Developers Conference on September 14, 2016 in Gaithersburg, MD. This collaborative conference focused on developing and improving data analysis tools for SMRT Sequencing will be held at the Hilton Washington DC Gaithersburg Hotel, the day prior to the Genome in a Bottle Workshop at the NIST campus.

The goal of the conference is to advance development of analytical tools for PacBio data by enabling in-person brainstorming and idea exchange among software developers and the bioinformatics community. Through facilitation of open discussion and collaboration, the event will nurture development of new and existing open source tools for de novo assembly, genome phasing, structural variations, methylation, targeted sequencing and Iso-Seq™ analysis.

    Keynote speaker:
Gene Myers, Ph.D., Max Planck Institute

    Confirmed speakers:
Ali Bashir, Ph.D., Mount Sinai School of Medicine
    Jason Chin, Ph.D., PacBio
Sergey Koren, Ph.D., National Human Genome Research Institute

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
