  • Different NextGen platforms sharing the same space

    Our group has a 454 sequencer with the workflow split over two rooms Lab 1) Library prep and emPCR set-up Lab 2) emulsion breaking, enrichment and sequencing (sequencer is also in lab 2).

    My question is, if we buy an Illumina or Solid will it be able to fit in alongside the 454 set-up we already have. I've got the chance to move our operations to a bigger lab and I want to try and do some future proofing, so if anyone can offer some advice on how their 454 works alongside other platforms and what considerations I may have to bear in mind it would be much appreciated.

    I have visited a lab where all 3 instruments share the same single large room. I guess the chemistry part was performed in various other rooms, just like any PCR setup. Illumina Cluster stations were in the same room too.
