ICG Americas-II – The 2nd International Conference on Genomics in the Americas

    September 12-13, 2013
    Sacramento, CA

    Event Organizer: BGI, UC Davis
    Event website URL: http://www.icgamericas.org/

The 2nd International Conference on Genomics in the Americas will bring together the unique strengths of two world-class institutions – BGI and University of California, Davis – to provide a powerful platform to share ground-breaking research in basic and applied genomics and to advance new approaches to sequencing and bioinformatics.

Scheduled for September 12 - 13, 2013 in Sacramento, CA, ICG Americas-II is modeled after BGI’s International Conferences on Genomics held annually since 2006 in China, which is regarded as one of the top scientific gatherings that features recent developments in genome sciences. The conference is uniquely formatted to maximize opportunities to interact directly with other genomics industry luminaries, scientific thought leaders, key decision makers, top pharmaceutical executives, and influential policy makers.

Conveniently located in Sacramento, California’s capital is close to major destinations for business and pleasure - such as high-tech Silicon Valley, culturally fused San Francisco, and wine connoisseur’s dream, scenic Napa Valley. The ICG Americas-II venue offers an environment conducive to information exchange, generation of new ideas and acceleration of applications that benefit the life sciences.

    Highlights of ICG Americas-II include:
Prestigious gathering of global thought leaders devoted to the latest developments in human, plant, microbial, and animal genome sciencesPre-conference training programs offered by the UC Davis Genome CenterPre-conference microbial genomics meeting hosted by the FDAA full-service dinner that brings Napa Valley to Sacramento with wine tasting, demonstration and live entertainment, attended exclusively by conference speakers, luminaries and other conference attendeesProximity to multiple international life sciences companies in the Bay AreaAccess to multiple national historical sites and museums in Sacramento and to world-class outdoor recreation in Lake Tahoe

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
