  • Staff Scientist – NGS data analysis – Massachusetts General Hospital

Position: Computational Biology & Bioinformatics Staff Scientist
Institutions: Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA
Department: Center for Computational Discovery at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center
Reports To: Director of the Center for Computational Discovery
Salary: Commensurate with level of experience
    Status: Full-time

The Center for Computational Discovery (CCD) collaborates with laboratories in the Cancer Center of the Massachusetts General Hospital to take high-throughput approaches (e.g., sequencing, microarray, functional screening, imaging) to answer applied and fundamental questions in cancer biology and medicine. We seek an expert in the analysis of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data.

    Responsibilities will include:
    • Working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams to design experiments.
    • Analyzing the output of NGS runs for quality and biological meaning.
    • Contributing to the publication of results.
    • Developing and publishing new analytical methods, where needed.
    • Contributing to the CCD’s software libraries, which are written in R, C/C++, Python and SQL.

Experiments include (but are not limited to):
    • ChIP-seq
    • RNA-seq
    • Digital gene expression
    • Whole exome re-sequencing
    • Whole genome re-sequencing

    Minimal qualifications:
    • 2+ years of post-doctoral work analyzing NGS data
    • Experience with a statistical programming language (e.g., Matlab, R)
    • Excellent teamwork/collaboration and interpersonal skills
    • Proficiency in written and spoken English
    • Good communication skills

    Preferred qualifications:
    • Experience with a general programming language (e.g., Java, C/C++), a scripting language (e.g., Perl, Python) and SQL
    • Experience with cluster computing
    • Formal education in biology, statistics and computer science
    • Experience with multi-person software development

The position is open for immediate filling.

If interested, please email the following to Sridhar Ramaswamy ([email protected]):
    • A brief statement discussing why you are a strong candidate for this position.
    • Curriculum vitae listing education, qualifications, and experiences, including a list of scientific publications.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
