  • Research Scientist in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Cornell University

Cornell University has an immediate opening for a Research Associate or postdoctoral position in bioinformatics and computational biology. We are looking for a highly motivated and talented computational biologist to join our research team. We use ribosome profiling coupled with deep-sequencing to analyze genome-wide translation control in mammalian cells (Science, 324:218, 2009; Nature, 466:835, 2010). This is an excellent opportunity for computational biologist to collaborate with wet bench scientists and participate in next generation sequencing experiments.

The ideal candidate must have a Ph.D. and direct experience in programming and high-throughput analysis of biological data (such as microarrays and deep sequencing). The candidate is expected to be able to work independently to develop new algorithm to facilitate novel discoveries. Programming language such as PERL or Python is required for this position. Experience with statistic analytic tools, such as R, SAS, SPLUS, and MatLab, is also required. Familiarity with major biological databases, such as NCBI, ENSEML, is highly desirable. Molecular biology background is a strong plus.

Interested applicants should submit current CV, with a statement of research interests and contact information for three referees to [email protected]

Cornell University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action educator and employer. Competitive salary and excellent benefits will be provided.

      About Ph.D. degree

We received several inquiries about the requirement of PhD degree in this position. We do consider candidates lacking PhD degree but with strong working experience and skills. However, the position title will be changed accordingly if those candidates are successful in the final screen.

          Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
          by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

          Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
          by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
