    Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Bioinformatics

Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford, South Parks Road, Oxford

    Grade 7: £30,738 - £37,768 p.a.

The Department of Plant Sciences is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Assistant. This is a 42 month project financed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This grant is held by Dr Steven Kelly and the work is to be conducted in his lab in the Department of Plant Sciences, Oxford. The responsibilities of the post-holder will be to use bioinformatic, computational and modelling approaches to assess transgenic rice lines and develop novel analysis methods to use this data to help direct the engineering strategy for introducing C4 photosynthesis into rice.

The postholder should have: Extensive experience in computational or statistical analysis of biological data. Expert knowledge of one or more scripting or programming languages (e.g. Perl, Python, Ruby, C++ or Java etc.). High motivation with intellectual curiosity and rigour. A PhD and publication record in a relevant area (e.g. bioinformatics, computational biology, evolutionary biology, computational modelling etc). Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks. Ability to manage the day-to-day running of a research project, including supervision of research students (undergraduate or postgraduate). Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to present research at national and international symposia. Ability to keep detailed lab book records of experiments and analyses. Experience in the analysis of transcriptome sequence data. Experience in the analysis of high-throughput sequence data. Experience in constructing bioinformatic data analysis pipelines. Experience in gene regulatory network reconstruction and analysis.

Excellent benefits include 38 days’ annual leave.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Steven Kelly ([email protected]).

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 4 March 2016.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
