  • Can I get the Illumina model from a machines name?

    Hi All,
I understand that the header in Illumina Fastq files contains the name of the machine that carried out the sequencing. Is it possible to figure out what model the machine was (GAII vs HighSeq 1000 or 2000 etc)?
    For example:
    HWI-EAS407_0000 or SOLEXA3_175
    thanks!

May be .. unless the default name assigned by the instrument software for a flowcell was changed by the owner of the machine.

Disclaimer: I don't think there is a way to be 100% sure, unless you knew where the data came from.

Take the following with a pound of salt :-)

        MiSeq - HWI-M0XXXX
        HiSeq (2000) - HWI-SXXXX
        HiSeq (2500) - HWI-DXXXX

Perhaps others can add to this list (especially if their machines are using stock identifiers).

Very cool. I'd be happy to annotate/maintain a list or spreadsheet as a resource if people want to contribute. There is one in my building I can add!
          HighSeq 2000: HWI-ST765

Why don't you drop an email to Illumina directly? I don't see why they shouldn't answer you. (By the way, I've been wondering the same question although I never needed an answer...!)

                Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
                by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
