  • Bioinformatician wanted - Nextgen sequencing data management and analysis

Project Title: Bioinformatician (Research Fellow) for Next-generation
    sequencing data management and analysis

Keyword descriptors: Bioinformatics, sequencing, pipeline, programming,
    genome scale analysis

    Project Description:

We seek a Bioinformatician to manage and analyze data generated by an
ultrahigh-throughput DNA sequencing instrument (e.g. Solexa, 454, ABI Solid
    or similar).

Responsibilities will include setting up an analysis server to take sequence
output and conduct downstream bioinformatics analysis including: mapping to
reference sequences, genome re-sequencing, microRNA deep-sequencing,
expression analysis, chip-seq etc. Curation of sequence data, data quality
control, genome scale data analysis and communication with diverse
    investigators.
Candidates should have a minimum of a MSc in Computer science,
Bioinformatics or a related area. Applicants with computing skills and a
strong interest in biological problems from a numerate discipline
(engineering, physics, mathematics, biophysics) are also encouraged to
    apply.

Candidates should have expertise in Unix/Linux operating systems, skilled in
the use of MySQL databases and have strong knowledge of programming and
scripting languages like Java, C++ and Perl (Bioperl). Knowledge of a
statistical analysis language such as R is a plus.

The contract will be for two years and be made at the level of Research
Fellow level 2 or 3 (40-55k euros depending on relevant experience) and includes pension contribution and benefits.

This promises to be anexciting and challenging role with the opportunity to work with the latest
    sequencing technology.

Funding agency/awarding body: Science Foundation Ireland (SFI)

Enquiries to be made to: Letter of interest and CV including names and
addresses of referees by 27th February 2008 to Prof. Brendan Loftus

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
