Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine is seeking a motivated bioinformatician to join the newly established Center for Biomedical Informatics. The primary goal of the center is to enhance our understanding of human disease and to improve clinical care using cutting-edge bioinformatics and genomics approaches. Research activities of the Center for Biomedical Informatics are currently focused on applied bioinformatics and genomics, in areas of human genetic variations, microbiome, infectious diseases, neuroscience, genetic disorders, and cancer.
The primary responsibility of the successful individual is to conduct genomic data analysis for various collaborative research and clinical projects, and to develop bioinformatics methodologies and software tools as needed. The center has its own next-generation sequencers and access to various internal and external genomic facilities.
The successful individual will be appointed as Associate Bioinformatics Scientist (Research Associate track). He/she should have a strong biological background with advanced statistical and computer skills. The ideal candidate should have analytical expertise in one or more types of genomic data, including but not limited to next-generation sequencing, expression microarray, genotyping, and arrayCGH. Strong personal skills and the ability to work independently and yet function as part of the team are essential.
Requirements:
- PhD degree in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, or related fields
- Strong interest and at least 3 years experience in biomedical research
- Genomic data analysis expertise
- Strong programming skills in R and/or MATLAB, C/C++, Perl, SQL, PHP, Java, or Python
- Strong UNIX/LINUX system expertise
- Excellent organization and communication skills
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Next-Generation Sequencing experience strongly preferred
- Familiarity with bioinformatics resources and software strongly preferred
- Ability to work independently and take initiative when necessary
- Be accountable and meet deadlines
