    Position: Software Engineer, Bioinformatics
    Site: MaRS Centre, Toronto
    Department: Informatics & Biocomputing
    Reports To: Dr. Paul C. Boutros
    Salary: Flexible based on experience
    Hours: 35 Hrs/week
    Status: Full-Time Contract, 1-3 years


    The Role:
    The Boutros Lab research team at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research is a global leader in cancer genomics. Our work helps to improve the treatment and care for thousands of cancer patients across the world. As one of the largest bioinformatics labs in Canada, our team utilizes a broad set of computational, mathematical and statistical skills to answer pressing questions in cancer research. Our work is regularly published in scientific journals such as Nature and Bioinformatics.

    Software engineers at the Boutros Lab are passionate about applying their knowledge of software development and design to improve scientific research. Our engineers develop scalable and distributed software solutions that maximize utilization of our 8500 core computing cluster and address the challenges of storing and accessing the hundreds of terabytes of genomic data that our team generates and analyzes. Solving these types of problems requires talents in research, collaboration as well as technical leadership. Having a solid background in computer science will enable you to continually come up with new ideas and strong leadership skills will allow you to see your great ideas adopted by others.

    Responsibilities:
    * As a software engineer you will use your design, analysis and programming skills to create systems that improve code quality and boost productivity.
    * Assist with adoption of professional level design practices

    Preferred Qualifications:
    * Bachelor's degree or greater training in Software Engineering (preferred) or Computer Science/Engineering
    * Experience in systems software or algorithms.
    * Excellent implementation skills (C++, Perl, Python).
    * Knowledge of UNIX/Linux environments.
    * Familiarity with distributed programming beneficial.
    * Candidates with 1-3 years of hands-on experience (co-op included).

    Nice to Have:
    * Experience developing R code.
    * Prior exposure to molecular biology, biochemistry, or bioinformatics.
    * Experience with RDBMS systems (e.g. PostgreSQL)
