  • UCSC genome browser download

    Hi,

I am trying to download parts of the UCSC genome browser to create a local copy. I a following instructions here:

updated Jun 06, 2017 For many years, installing a local mirror required it to be done manually. In the last few years, the UCSC genome browser created a simpler, automated way to install: I haven&#…

But I keep hitting this error:

    n# rsync -avzP rsync://hgdownload.cse.ucsc.edu/htdocs/ /var/www/genomebrowser/
rsync: getaddrinfo: hgdownload.cse.ucsc.edu 873: Name or service not known
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(122) [Receiver=3.0.7]

I get the same error from the UCSC mirror sites too.

I am probably missing something very basic, much appreciated if someone can point it out!

Are you behind a firewall? Does the firewall config allow rsync for other sites?

      I found this link.

It may be that you have an old version of rsync.

Genomax and kwatts59: Thanks for the responses. I am indeed behind a firewall, and this seems to be the problem. I have asked my network admin to let me rsync to other sites. I will try after the firewall restriction is removed.

        thanks,
        Ashwatha.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
          by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

          Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
          by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
