  • Bioinformatics - Research Opportunity in Turkey for visiting scientists

We are seeking fellow bioinformaticians who would like to join our "The Advanced Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Group" at National Research Institute of Turkey. We are primarily working on the analysis and interpretation of next generation sequencing (NGS) data. Our group is involved at analysis of the data generated in our sequencing facility which performs whole exome sequencing, whole genome sequencing, RNAseq, metagenome sequencing and MethylSeq. Most of the sequencing projects we conduct aims at associating genes with human Mendelian Disorders. We develop our own computational tools for data analysis while utilizing the currently available software. In this sense we are interested in computational scientists who would like to develop tools for NGS data analysis as well as bioinformaticians who are willing to carry out case studies using NGS data.

    Location:
Our institution is located in Gebze which is near Istanbul. Daily shuttle bus services from all parts of Istanbul are available. Public housing is also available inside the campus of the institution.

    Requirements:
    • PhD degree in either Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Life Sciences or any other subject closely related to Computational Genome Analysis
    • Fluent in English
    • Knowledge about DNA sequencing, sequence alignment, sequence assembly and genetics
    • Experience in Next Generation Sequencing data analysis - preferably Illumina data
    • Knowledge and experience in a commonly used programming language like Java, Python, C++, etc.

    Funding:
The researchers will be funded by TUBITAK under "2221 - Fellowships for Visiting Scientists and Scientists on Sabbatical Leave". Hence the researchers must be eligible for this program. We expect the researchers to work with us for at least 6 months. The maximum length of the program is 12 months. The benefits include:
    • A monthly stipend of up to 3.000 US$ depending on the applicants qualifications.
    • Travel costs (round trip) and health insurance premiums.
    Details can be found at

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
