  • Experiences with bioinformatics job prospects in different cities

    Hello,

I graduated with a biomedical informatics masters last year and am planning my future career in bioinformatics. I am highly motivated to relocate but would like to stay where I move to in the usa. In choosing a city how have other's career experiences been in working in cities that have just for example about 50-100 bioinformatics jobs in (just one of many job sites) simplyhired.com (seattle, chicago, philadelphia) compared to 100-400 job places (san fran., boston, san jose, wash. dc)? Have you found there are enough jobs that staying in the city and finding many further job opportunities for advancement is practical or have you had to move away for a better job or just finding a job? Have you been able to find work allowing you to stay in a subarea of bioinformatics of interest to you or have you adapted to a different bioinformatics subarea for a job?

I intend to work more on the software engineering side but describing your general experience in that or other field areas is welcome!

I have found that one job is enough for me the past 8 years... Your mileage may vary.

But you can always move. I would focus on finding an interesting job and then see if it's in a 'good enough' city, personally.

That's quite good that you gained such a job. I will put effort into considering more the moving for the job but possibly looking into moving again strategy. If you have moved for a job, how was the adjustment to being in the new location?

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
        by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
        by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
