  • PhD candidate in computational biology

We are recruiting a talented student in the field of computational biology for a PhD candidate position at the Department of Informatics at the University of Bergen, Norway. The position is connected to the Computational Biology Unit (CBU) and linked to the project “Evolutionary analysis of gene regulation”.

    Project

This project will address fundamental questions related to how RNA transcript abundance is regulated at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level, how these processes are adapted across cell types and organisms, and how they change over evolutionary time. The candidate will analyze next generation sequencing data from basal metazoa aiming to identify features that may have accompanied the emergence of multicellularity and complex development.

    Qualifications

    • Applicants must have achieved a master’s degree or equivalent within the field of computational biology or related fields, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the formal admission requirements for the PhD program are met before appointment can be made.

    • Applicants must be fluent in spoken English and possess excellent written skills.

    • Demonstrated proficiency in at least one common programming language is required. Formal training in computer science, background in statistics, and molecular biology training are highly advantageous.

    • Techniques required for this research project include analysis of high-throughput sequencing data, visualization, whole-genome analysis of sequence motifs, and phylogenetics. Familiarity with this type of data and methods for analysis as well as the relevant statistics will be an advantage.

    • Personal skills will be emphasized. The candidate should have a demonstrated ability to efficiently learn new skills, be motivated, responsible, and enthusiastic about research.

    We can offer

    • starting salary of NOK 421,000 (~70000 USD)

    • a competitive and stimulating work environment mentored by experienced scientists

    • a good pension scheme in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund

The deadline is Aug 15th and all applications must be received through the following portal:

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
