  • Two Microbial Informatics positions, University of Technology Sydney, Australia

The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) is a top ranked university for teaching and learning within Australia, with strong relationships with business, industry and the community.

The ithree institute at (UTS) brings together an internationally competitive team focused on addressing key challenges in the understanding and control of infectious diseases in humans and animals. The institute’s innovative science uses a systems biology approach to develop a greater insight into basic biology and its application to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases.

We are seeking a Senior Computational Biologist (UTS position title: Senior Lecturer) and a Postdoctoral Bioinformatics Scientist to expand our scientific programme in microbial genomics. In this position you will be responsible for extracting and managing data from the high-throughput sequencing pipeline (Illumina HiSeq, MiSeq and 454 based at UTS and the Ramaciotti centre (http://www.ramaciotti.unsw.edu.au/).

In addition to supporting microbial genome and RNA-Seq projects, analysis of TraDIS data sets will be required (Simultaneous assay of every Salmonella Typhi gene using one million transposon mutants, Langridge et. al., Genome Res. 2009 Dec;19(12):2308-16).

One of Australia’s most popular cities, Sydney includes stunning views that are the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge right through to the magnificent Blue Mountains. A diverse hub of culture, shopping, and food with beautiful beaches that hug the coastline Sydney can satisfy all tastes and styles. UT is based close to Central Station, the centre of Sydney’s transport network and offers easy access to the City and all its attractions.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
