  • UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) with Ion Torrent

    Hi all!
Does anyone of you use an UPS for preventing power failures ? If yes...which one do you use ?
I'm preparing the lab for the installation of the Ion Torrent PGM and Torrent Server and I have a lot of doubts about the required equipment....thanks!!

If possible contact the sales rep and ask for a pre-installation guide. Applied Biosystems always has these available for their instruments. They will probably have a recommended UPS.

You might want to use a different one, but at least you have some specifications to start with.

      Thank you Phillip!
Yes, we alredy have the "Site Preparation Guide" form Life Technologies...but in this user manual it is only specified that an UPS (from Multiple Suppliers) is required and should be compatible with 1500W output or greater for 1 Torrent Server and 1 Torrent PGM Sequencer.
So...I am just wondering wich one (brand or model) you are using with Ion Torrent.
      Thanks,

      Cristian

We are not using a UPS with our sequencers. The run time being as short as it is, we haven't been as concerned with losing power during a run as we would be with a Hi-seq.

A UPS also provides protection from power surges and brownouts that can kill electronics so there is value beyond just battery backup.

The Torrent Server has an optional SW module to shutdown the server if the power goes out, so I'd make sure the Torrent Server UPS is compatible. There is some info in the User Manual. --rob

We are using an APC SMT2200

            Torrent Server (Optiplex) 115V*10A =~1150VA
            Ion Torrent PGM 110V *9A = ~990 VA

            total ~ 2140 VA

              Thank you all!
We just bought the same one suggested by ptran.
It also should be compatible with the SW module that shutdown the server if the power goes out.

We have ours connected to the UPS/Backup power point supplied by the Hospital we are based in. Unfortunately there is a split second delay before it kicks in which causes the Torrent Server to reboot or something. To compound matters they test this backup once a month! Anyways at least it's not a dirty shut down which takes fdsk (or whatever it's called) several hours to check the drives.

Ours is from Franek Technologies--we have an emergency generator, so this is basically to protect it during the transition.

FT1-IONPGM-IT Certified Laboratory Power Protection System for an Ion Torrent PGM
Sequencer and WorkStation (computer & monitor)

Pluggable Unit - Input & Output: Rated and configured for the above listed
                  instrument.
Input, 120 VAC: Provided with a NEMA 5-15P plug on a 6' power cord.
Output, Correct voltage, power and receptacles to match the Ion Torrent

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
