Faculty position in Bioinformatics / Statistical Genetics

We are seeking an innovative investigator with a strong research background in Bioinformatics or Statistical Genetics to lead an independent research program within the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (VCCRI), Sydney, Australia — an independent research organisation committed to excellence in basic and translational biomedical research that is affiliated with the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

Preference will be given to individuals whose research can complement our existing research activities in bioinformatics, genomics, and epigenomics.

The successful candidate will be provided with office and support space, and significant financial support to rapidly establish their program, and will be eligible for an academic appointment at UNSW.

    RESPONSIBILITIES
Your research program might focus on one or more of the following areas, closely linked with experimental science within the VCCRI: whole genome sequencing analysis, disease gene discovery, clinical genomics, transcriptional regulation, epigenetics, transcriptomics, and systems biology. The successful applicant will be expected to develop or continue a vigorous independent research program, secure and maintain extramural research funding, and participate in graduate and postdoctoral training.

    REQUIREMENTS
PhD/DPhil/MD in the fields of computational biology, bioinformatics, statistical genetics, or a related discipline. Candidates will have expertise that includes high throughput data generation and analysis, excellent verbal and written communication skills, relevant research and teaching experience, a record of peer-reviewed publications, and a strong interest in innovative and interdisciplinary research.

    HOW TO APPLY
Interested candidates should submit their curriculum vitae, statement of research interest and names of three references to Maria Voukenas, HR Manager [email protected]

    CLOSING DATE
Applications will be accepted until July 31, 2015.

    POLICY
The VCCRI is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and boasts a record of gender parity at all levels of the organisation.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
