  • 5500 Chemical Waste Disposal

    Hello All, far from the glamour of read lengths and bead density I'm trying to sort out responsible waste disposal.

    We are using the 5500 system and I can't find any good information on the chemical content of the 5500 reagents and Enricher buffers. The packaging gives the names of the hazardous components but no concentration info and when I follow the MSDS links of the AB website there are no documents.

    I'm very keen to be as responsible as possible but I can't justify sending everything through our disposal service if there's nothing in there more hazardous than household bleach.

    I realise that different local laws will apply but does anyone have good advice on estimating the concentrations of chemicals in the waste?

    There is silver nitrate in one of the reagents. I can't remember which one, but it should be purple in color.

      Buffer C contains Silver Nitrate (0-1%) but it's a clear solution. This chemical waste will obviously need proper disposal but what about the 'waste' from the enricher, the unused buffers and butanol. Does this all go down the drain?

        It doesn't look like the purple colour is an indicator for the presence of Silver Nitrate. There are three strips with the colour;
        FWD SR,
        REV SR,
        ECC SR.

        The MSDS is only available for the ECC right now and glycerol is the only listed chemical there.

          Thanks, I didn't realize that. I was assuming it was purple since silver nitrate on surfaces or skin turns purple. Or I could be wrong.

            We should think of brining new methods to dispose wastes. I recently read in an online about how factories and industries are spreading their waste in the sea or lakes and in return these become main reason for many diseases.

              Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
              by seqadmin

              Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

              Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
              by seqadmin

              Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
