  • Drew Berry is one of the great movie-makers of the molecular world

This is a very cool presentation if you have audio and video on your computer. Well worth taking the time to see this nine minute presentation.

It's one thing to read a description of DNA's function and replication, and how it fits inside a cell, but it's quite another to actually see it happen. Australian biomedical animator Drew Berry, who was recently awarded a MacArthur fellowship, makes movies illustrating these processes, says The Loom's Carl Zimmer. At a TEDx talk recently posted online, Berry describes his work as a continuation of the scientific tradition of drawing or sketching to illustrate an idea. "My first thought was, 'Why didn’t I get to see these movies when I was learning about biology as a kid?'" Zimmer says. "There’s no question that people like Berry are going to be making the movies that fill our heads in our future when we think about what’s going on in our bodies."

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
