    About the Role
    The Research Officer (RO) is a postdoctoral Bioinformatician who will be based at the Baker Institute in the Systems Genomics Lab and supervised by A/Prof Inouye and A/Prof Salim, Chief Biostatistician at the Baker Institute.

    Duties
    You will perform a range of tasks, including:
    • Providing biostatistics and bioinformatics expertise for experimental/study design, data analyses and interpretation, and reporting of results.
    • Collaborating with other Baker Institute Laboratories to provide bioinformatics support and to identify experimental design/data analysis issues that would benefit from bioinformatics/biostatistics expertise.
    • Coordinating the processing and analysis of data.
    • Developing new and/or revised analytic methodologies.
    • Performing critical analyses of literature relevant to research.
    • Assisting in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presenting at conferences and workshops, and in the writing of project reports, articles and other documents.
    • Organising data, research and analysis procedures.
    • Participating in the development of general goals for the research project and in the planning of the field and/or laboratory work; planning and coordinating the work of laboratory assistants, graduate students, programmers and other support personnel; and serving as a consultant to the project director, grant principals, and staff.
    • Organising data for the preparation of proposals for new funding.
    • Assuring compliance with affirmative action and safety programs.
    • Assisting with preparation of research publications and grant applications where relevant.
    • Proactive attendance at team meetings and attendance at all relevant seminars and staff meetings.


    Skills and Experience
    To succeed in this role, you will have:
    • A PhD in a quantitative discipline (such as bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, statistics or epidemiology) and/or health science discipline (such as biochemistry, molecular biology or genetics/genomics).
    • Research experience in genetics, genomics, computational biology or bioinformatics including significant experience in the statistical or computational analysis of large human genomic datasets.
    • Experience in the management, processing and quality control of large datasets.
    • Previous experience in coordinating activities of students and junior staff.
    • A high level of interpersonal skills, which enable the appointee to liaise effectively with a wide range of people at a variety of levels internal and external to the Baker Institute.
    • Demonstrated ability to use Unix-based systems, computing clusters and related queuing systems, modern scripting/programming languages including R.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and contribute to high impact research publications.
    • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines without compromising close attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Proven ability to work as a member of a team as well as autonomously without close supervision.
    • Demonstrated ability and willingness to take initiative and to improve and enhance existing systems and procedures (quality assurance).
    • A high level of independence and initiative, and demonstrated ability to consistently produce high quality results.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with privacy requirements.
