  • Bioinformatics Software Developer

    Position: Bioinformatics Software Developer
    Site: MaRS Centre, Toronto
    Department: Informatics and Bio-computing
    Reports To: Manager – Sequencing Production Bioinformatics
    Salary: Commensurate with level of experience
    Hours: 35 Hrs/week
    Status: Permanent, Full-Time

    The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a Bioinformatics Software Developer. The Bioinformatics Software Developer is an intermediate technical computing role requiring an individual with experience in both software development and genomics (specifically next generation sequence analysis), and is dedicated to supporting a multidisciplinary team of scientists, laboratory technicians, and informatics professionals.

    The Bioinformatics Software Developer will participate in specification, analysis, design, and implementation of software solutions to support the Sequencing Production Bioinformatics team. The developer will be jointly responsible with the team for building automated analysis pipelines for next generation sequencing analysis, providing tools for sharing and exploring large genomics data sets, and implementing solutions for tracking samples and managing data in the laboratory.

    Computing resources that are available to the team include a 3000+ core HPC computing environment and 1 Petabyte of storage.

    This is primarily a software development role where our current focus is on integrating a diverse array of open source, academically developed bioinformatics software packages and automating our data management and data processing.

    This is not a research role, although there will be many opportunities to participate in research projects led by investigators at the OICR and collaborating institutions.

    The responsibilities include:
    • To build and enhance our next generation sequencing analysis pipeline such that it is consistently, reliably, efficiently and correctly processing data;
    • Automating analysis processes;
    • Designing and implementing solutions that ensure that data is managed efficiently, securely, and without loss or corruption from the instrument to long-term storage;
    • Developing scalable solutions for the exploration, annotation and visualization of genomics sequence data in the biological context;
    • Documentation and communication of software solutions and updating the team knowledge base;
    • Performing initial stage analysis on next-generation sequencing data transforming data from sequence to information meaningful for Biologists;
    • Collaborating with third party software vendors to characterize and resolve problems with production software systems.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in related discipline, with demonstrated experience in the skill set requested;
    • Experience developing software solutions for a high-availability production software environment;
    • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment;
    • Experience with next generation sequencing platform data analysis highly desirable;
    • Advanced skills in Unix shell programming environment a must;
    • Competence with some Unix-based scripting language (Perl, Python etc.) is required;
    • Fluency with one or more general purpose software development languages such as C++, C, or Java a must;
    • Familiarity with current software engineering best practices (SWEBOK, Agile);
    • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills;
    • Willingness to be accessible and respond to production pipeline issues outside of normal working hours.

    OICR is an innovative cancer research institute located in the MaRS Centre in the Discovery District in downtown Toronto.
