  • Scientific Programmer at EMBL Heidelberg - competitive salary

    Please apply here: http://tinyurl.com/phyogsj
    Closing date: 22 June 2014

    Job Description:

We are looking for a Computational Biologist, (Bio)Informatician or (Bio)Statistician to strengthen a new research group focused on Personalized Functional Genomics. One of the main interests of the group is the statistical analysis and integration of large-scale ‘omics data to answer biological questions related to understanding the molecular causes of complex genetic traits and diseases. The scientific programmer will play a key role in the day-to-day activities of the group.

    The main responsibilities will include:
    • Providing programming and statistics support to the group (especially PhD students and post-docs). In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on independent research projects.
    • Developing data analysis pipelines and databases for different research projects.
    • Interaction with the other statistics/programming staff at EMBL for ensuring efficiency and synergy.

    Qualifications and Experience

The ideal applicant should hold a PhD or similar experience in (Bio)Informatics, (Bio) Statistics, Computational Biology, or a related field and have a solid background in statistics and basic knowledge of molecular genetics. Basic skills with the LINUX/UNIX operating system are essential. Furthermore, a strong background in statistical programming is mandatory. Experience in a scripting or programming language and/or web programming will be considered an asset. Familiarity with the analysis, integration and management of large-scale genomics and functional genomics datasets and experience with R/Bioconductor will be considered an advantage. In particular experience with genomics sequencing data (e.g. RNA-Seq, ChIP-seq, or variant calling) will be a plus. Strong communication skills as well as the ability to interact with other scientists and to work in an international and interdisciplinary team are essential.

More details and how to apply can be found here:

EMBL's administrative headquarters in the Southern German city of Heidelberg hosts five research units and many of the laboratory's core facilities.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
