  • 2 Computer Scientists in Genomics (#100719a)

The newly founded Institute for Molecular Biology gGmbH (IMB) is an Excellence Center for Life Science, funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation, and located in Mainz, Germany. The institute is about to set up a Genomcis Facility, focusing on Next Generation Sequencing and Microarrays.
The successful candidates will be responsible for handling and processing of large amounts of high throughput sequence data. You will implement and develop software tools provided by academic and commercial partners to analyze research topics in the fields of epigenetics, developmental biology and DNA repair, and work in interdisciplinary teams.

    You will
    • Support in-house scientists in High Throughput Sequencing analysis from experimental planning, data validation and functional analysis
    • Collaborate with our scientists on several projects in parallel
    • Participate in the responsibility to set-up and develop the data analysis pipeline
    • Have the opportunity to develop your own research project and apply for scientific funding

    Required qualifications
    • PhD, Diploma or equivalent qualification in Bioinformatics/Informatics or relevant field
    • At least 3 years of experience in sequence data analysis
    • Experience in NGS data analysis (454, Illumina, SOLiD)
    • Basic knowledge of statistics (R, SAS, Matlab or similar)
    • In depth programming skills, at least one language (Perl, Python, Java, C++)
    • Commitment and dedication to your work

    Desirable qualifications
    • Successful interdisciplinary collaborations
    • Experience using compute clusters and LINUX
    • Know-how on the use of high volume data

    We offer
    • Start-up spirit
    • Working on interesting projects in an international environment
    • Flexible working hours
    • Advanced training opportunities
    • Competitive salary
    • Favorable pension scheme
    • IMB is an equal opportunity employer

    Start Q1/2010
Duration Initially 2-5 years, incl. option for extension

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
