    Bioinformatician Sheep Genomics and Metagenomics

Are you interested in joining an exciting project and work in a warm sunny city in the south of Portugal? CEBAL (Centro de Biotecnologia Agrícola e Agro-Alimentar do Alentejo) has available a position for a bioinformatician in the frame of the project "Using genomics for the selection of sheep resistant to footrot and parasites", funded by Alentejo 2020 (reference ALT20-03-0145-FEDER-000037). The project involves several Portuguese research institutions and industry partners. The project goals are to develop genomic tools for the identification of sheep displaying genetic resistance to footrot and parasites, as well as applying metagenomic approaches to characterize the microbiome in sheep affected by footrot and healthy sheep. The project will involve bioinformatic analyses of data generated with high-throughput sequencing technologies.

    Scientific Field
    Life Sciences, Genetics, Bioinformatics

    Description of the position
For this position we are looking for a highly motivated bioinformatician with experience in processing and analyzing high-throughput sequence data. Previous experience with bioinformatics analyses of Illumina sequence data, as well as programming skills in Perl and/or Python, are essential. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team, and will work closely with the project’s senior scientists and biologists.

    Responsibilities
    • Process and analyze high-throughput sequence data, using custom scripts and publicly available software
    • Participate in the design and/or execution of experiments conceived to answer the project’s goals
    • Maintain and document data analyses pipelines

    Qualifications
    • Masters degree in bioinformatics, genetics, computational biology or related field
    • Previous experience in analysis of high-throughput sequence datasets is essential

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
