The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, School of Medicine, University of Miami is seeking a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist. The successful candidate will work with research teams to extend capabilities in next generation data analysis and Bioinformatics to improve the understanding of genetic variation in human health and disease. Responsibilities include developing, maintaining and operating next generation data analysis to perform the following: image analysis, base calling, sequencing assembly, SNP verification and downstream annotation. The successful applicant will work on large-scale multidisciplinary research projects in collaboration with the Sequencing Core and Center for Genomics Technologies to enable translational research and development in Clinical Genomics.
A Bachelor's degree and at least three years experience in Bioinformatics in large scale genome sequence analyses is required. Masters or PhD degree in Bioinformatics/ Computer Science/ Computational Biology preferred. Proven track record in providing solutions for laboratory-based experimentalists and demonstrable programming skills such as Java and/or C++/C required along with excellent scripting skills in PERL. The applicant must be proficient in using relational database management systems such as MySQL or Oracle. Experience with cluster computing, knowledge of resource management and job scheduling (eg PBS) desired. A working experience using next generation data analysis using two or more of the following platform technologies (Illumina GA, SOLID, 454) is required.
Applicants should have a working knowledge of UNIX/Linux environments. Applicants must have the ability to work in a fast moving interdisciplinary team environment and the ability to discuss issues and provide solutions to scientists with different backgrounds. A working knowledge in some of the following areas is required: analysis of GWAS data; microarray gene expression; gene prioritization using SNP, gene and pathway analysis; developing material for Bioinformatics tutorials and training courses; micro-RNA target prediction; analysis of methylation in epigenomics projects. Working experience analyzing copy number variation using microarray technologies is a plus. Any appropriate combination of education, certifications and/or relevant work experience will be considered.
