  • Bioinformatics Scientist – San Diego #2273

Why is one person more likely to develop a disease—like cancer, diabetes or Parkinson’s—than someone else? Why would one person respond differently to treatment than another? Illumina’s technologies are helping researchers around the world to answer these questions and others, on a scale not even possible a few years ago.

Illumina is the only life sciences company developing genome-wide technologies for genotyping, gene expression and sequencing—the three cornerstones of modern genetic analysis. By enabling studies of thousands of patient samples at once, our products set genetic discovery on fast forward. And we’re just getting started.

Bioinformatics Scientist – San Diego #2273

Illumina develops tools for the discovery of genetic variation and the analysis of its biological significance. We have developed assays for applications including sequencing, whole genome genotyping, gene expression, methylation, and copy number variation. We are seeking an exceptional individual to contribute to statistical data analysis of genomic data sets and related software tools. Your responsibilities may include:

    • Analysis of sequencing data
    • Analysis of genotyping data
    • LOH and copy number analysis
    • Differential expression analysis
    • Methylation data analysis
    • Participation in collaborations
    • Publication in peer reviewed journals
    • Benchmarking of software tools

We seek demonstrated accomplishment in some or all of the following skills:

    • Sequence analysis
    • Innovative algorithm development
    • Applied statistics
    • Critical problem solving and data analysis
    • Proficiency in R, matlab, and/or C/C++/C#
    • Superior written and verbal communication skills

    Education

    • Masters or PhD in computer science, mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, or equivalent
    • Biology knowledge strongly preferred

When you join the high-performing team at Illumina, your work takes on new meaning—to an exponential degree. Our growth, our positive culture, and the impact our products are having in the world ignite a passion that drives our people forward. And together, we accomplish beyond expectations.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
