  • Computational Biologist at STFC Hartree Centre, UK

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. STFC’s Hartree Centre is focused on the application of the latest data-centric and cognitive computing technologies from IBM, including its world-class ‘Watson’ cognitive computing platform.

We now have an opportunity for a Computational Biologist with an interest in data centric and HPC to work within the Computational Biology Group of STFC’s Scientific Computing Department. You will work on a variety of life sciences projects for the Hartree Centre, in the general area of genomics methods in chemical biology.

Suitable candidates will be educated to PhD level in life sciences, or possess significant relevant research experience. You will be an experienced computational biologist with particular focus on high end computing. A background in bioinformatics, genomics or systems biology is desirable.

Some experience of scientific software development, including utilising a range of compiled and scripting languages, is required. Experience in participating in projects across organisations with many different partners would be beneficial. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required to collaborate effectively with people from diverse scientific backgrounds.

For an informal discussion about this role please contact: Martyn Winn [email protected]

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
