  • PhD Position Division of Molecular Genetics

The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 2,300 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The Division of Molecular Genetics (Kst. B060) is seeking for May 2012 a

    PhD Position
    (Ref-No. 44/2012)

    Description:
At the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany we recently started an initiative of personalized oncology. The initiative is lead by Prof. Peter Lichter, Prof. Roland Eils and Prof. Christof von Kalle. In the group of Prof. Peter Lichter we aim to bring RNA-Sequencing into clinical application and invite applications for a PhD-Position for the analysis of next generation sequencing data with focus on RNA-sequencing.

The group has successfully performed several projects using high throughput sequencing technologies. We recently published a 2nd generation sequencing study on catastrophic DNA rearrangements in medulloblastoma in Cell. The team is international and multidisciplinary in a lively and friendly working atmosphere, and state of the art computing infrastructure. We are looking forward to expanding our team by a dedicated and strongly motivated person with distinct interest in the challenges of modern sequencing technologies.

Please send your application including a motivation letter, Curriculum Vitae (with publication list, if applicable), a list of courses followed and grades obtained, summary of the thesis, and contact details of two references. Only online applications will be accepted.

    Your profile:
    • Master degree in bioinformatics or biology with strong background in informatics/statistics (ideally experience with sequence analysis tools)
    or a related discipline
    • Knowledge of, and preferably experience with, handling (large) data sets, knowledge of molecular genetics and understanding of lab methods, knowledge of genome sequencing concepts
    • Solid programming and UNIX background
    • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
    • Good oral and written communication skills
    • Proficiency in English

The position is limited for 3 years.

    For further information please contact

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
