  • Bioinformatician (Metagenomics) position in Toulouse, France

A 3 year postdoctoral engineer position will be open in spring 2015 in the Functional Genomics of Metabolic Diseases Unit of the I2MC in Toulouse, France. The position is aimed at a computational biologist, with an emphasis on bioinformatics, capable of taking charge of the computational aspects of a project whereby various information obtained from human samples, as well as mouse models, are used together to infer biologically relevant hypotheses regarding the host/microbiome interactions that play a role in diabetes and obesityhealth. Data types include host transcriptome profiles (microarray, RNASeq, miRNA, LnCRNA…) of the target tissue, deep sequencing of the host tissue bacterial content and clinical parameters related to the disease condition.

Biological researchers in the unit have prepared all samples and collected all clinical/metabolic parameters. Various high throughput technologies have been employed using microarrays and deep sequencing to obtain transcriptomics and metagenomics datasets. This project begins with the computational processing of raw data files and the generation of normalized tables of values for each individual in order to develop statistical methods to establish biologically relevant hypotheses. Local bioinformaticians, biostatisticians and mathematicians are available to train and collaborate with the successful candidate, as needed, in order to ensure project completion. However, we are actively seeking someone that has experience (or at least a strong interest) in the metagenomics aspect of the project.
We are seeking for someone willing to get a permanent position at the institute.

The INSERM is the only French public research institute that is completely focused on human health. (http://english.inserm.fr). The Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases Institute, I2MC in French, is a center of 13 different research teams located in Toulouse (http://www.i2mc.inserm.fr).

    Requirements:
    • PhD in relevant discipline such as computer science, molecular biology, biostatistics, mathematics or bioinformatics and real life experience analyzing data from high throughput technologies.
    • Excellent programming/data analysis skills (preferably in R).
    • Familiarity with the fundamentals of molecular biology and willing to learn about biological concepts related to human health and host-microbe interactions
    • Enthusiasm and independence as well as the ability to work with others from different disciplines (biology, computation, mathematics/statistics).
    • Must be able to read, speak and write in the English language.

Preference will be shown to candidates that also have experience with metagenomics.

    Start Date: Spring 2015
    Salary Range: commensurate with experience
To apply, please send cover letter, list of publications and CV to: [email protected]

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
