  • POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN BIOINFORMATICS/COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY at Harvard Med. School

DESCRIPTION: Postdoctoral positions are currently available in Dr. Bhasin Systems Biomedicine laboratory at the BETH ISRAEL DEACONESS MEDICAL CENTER/HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL, Boston MA. We are looking for researchers to join our team for development of computational algorithms for integrating high throughput profiling data (e.g. genotyping, RNA-Seq data, ChIP-Seq, Epigenome, Proteome and Metabolome) with phenotype or clinical data. The focus of position will be to develop novel systems Biology modeling and analysis approaches for developing multi-dimensional networks and identifying master regulators that are critical in driving disease pathophysiology. The candidate will have the opportunity to do excellent and cutting edge research in computational systems biology, and work in a highly interdisciplinary environment.

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates should hold a MD, MD/PhD, PhD or MS in Computational Biology/ Bioinformatics/ Computer Science/ Biochemistry/ Mathematics/ Engineering/ Physics or Statistics. The position requires a strong background in algorithms and statistics, data management and mining, and machine learning. The candidate should have prior experience of work in systems biology and its stochastic computing, integrative modeling (using strong Bayesian network, HMM, etc.) and computational aspects. Candidates with prior experience in next generation sequencing data analysis are desirable. Candidates should have excellent programming skills and experience in C/ C++/ Java/ Perl/ Python and R. Highly motivated and creative candidates with excellent record of publications in peer-reviewed journals are encouraged to apply. The candidate is expected to have outstanding personal initiative and be able to work effectively as part of a team.

HOW TO APPLY: Candidates who are willing to work in an exciting environment on the cutting edge of systems biology, genomics, proteomics and translational medicine are encouraged to apply. Please send a CV, a brief description of previous research and the names of three references to: mbhasin at bidmc.harvard.edu

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
