  • New York Genome Center - Bioinformatics Scientist, Cancer Analysis

    NYGC is hiring a Bioinformatics Scientist to analyze and interpret cancer data.

    As Bioinformatics Scientist you will be responsible for the analysis and interpretation of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. This work will be done as part of a team of Bioinformatics Scientists, SW Engineers and Analysts passionate about understanding the genetic basis of cancer and genetic changes associated with tumor progression. The job requires creating and using software systems to analyze human somatic variation. Example projects include calling point mutations and structural variants in the face of tumor heterogeneity and stromal contamination; integration of genomic, transcriptome and functional sequencing to provide a more complete interpretation of the functional consequences of tumor mutations; methods for inferring tumor population history and understanding tumor progression. Publication of developed methods and scientific findings is encouraged.

    Job duties will include:
    •Develop and apply innovative sequence data analysis approaches for oncology;
    •Analyze sequencing data using established workflows and perform appropriate QC measures;
    •Assist, collaborate, consult with internal/external researchers on analyses of NGS data;

    Position Requirements:
    •Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, genetics, statistics or similar;
    •Demonstrated experience in NGS data analysis of genome or exome cancer samples;
    •2 or more years experience programming in R, Python, Unix shell scripting or similar;
    •Proficiency in utilizing data from public resources such as TCGA or COSMIC as part of data analysis or method development. Participation in TCGA, COSMIC, etc. projects is a big plus.
    •Experience or training in statistics or machine learning preferred;
    •Experience working in a Linux and SGE cluster environment;
    •A high tolerance for change and a sense of urgency since NYGC is in start-up mode.

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

    Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
