  • Solutions to Exercises in Cristianini & Hahn book ?

    Hey folks.

So, I have a computer science background and am trying to teach myself Bioinformatics.

    I'm reading this book:
Introduction to Computational Genomics: A Case Studies Approach (authors: Nello Cristianini, Matthew W. Hahn)

Many of you would be familiar with it (it's a classic).

Because I'm so new to this field, I'm a bit lost overall (I'm simultaneously trying to figure out BioPERL, BLASTing, etc.).

I need the solutions to the exercises in the back of the chapters. Even the first couple of chapters would be enough (I'll figure out the rest from there). If anyone out here has the solutions, or knows where I can access them, please hit me up -- it'll be a huge help.

(Note: the book has an accompanying website with solutions to related case studies, but not to exercises at the back of the chapters)

    Thanks!

I also come from a computer science background and had to do a lot of self-teaching. Never underestimate the power of wikipedia as a rudimentary educational tool!

I had the advantage of being able to take a Master's level bioinformatics course last year (my master's thesis is a combination of parallel computing/bioinf)... I just looked up every term I didn't understand (which was basically all of them) on wikipedia and it really augmented my learning process. The only advantage the course provided me was a structured learning environment that forced me to self-teach myself, which was facilitated through wikipedia.

    Cheers,
    Darren

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
      by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

      Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
      by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
