  • Postdoc in Bioinformatics of the Oral Microbiome, Ohio State University

The laboratory of Drs. Eugene Leys and Ann Griffen in the Division of Biosciences, College of Dentistry at the Ohio State University has an opening for a postdoctoral associate to study the oral microbiome. We have several ongoing projects including studies of the acquisition of the oral microbiome and changes during childhood, the interactions between oral microbes in a high throughput infection model, a collaborative study on cultivating previously uncultivated oral bacteria, and a collaborative study of the interactions of microbiome in HIV infected patients with the oral Candidiasis and HPV. We would also welcome development of new projects within the general areas of interest and logistical limits.

We are seeking candidates with the following abilities:

    • Good communication skills
    • Problem solving ability
    • Ability to work independently or collaboratively as needed
    • Experience in next generation sequence analysis, including whole genome, whole metagenome, 16S amplicon, and RNAseq.
    • Experience in Unix command-line tools, R, Python, Perl or other scripting language
    • Knowledge of biology including especially molecular biology and microbiology is desirable

The OSU College of Dentistry, currently celebrating its 125th anniversary, is located on the main campus of the University in Columbus. As well as being an active research institution in its own right, it has access to resources of multiple other colleges on campus. Columbus is the 15th largest city in the country, but is considered to be very livable without extreme traffic problems or high real estate prices.

If interested, please email CV to Eugene Leys, Ph.D., leys.1_at_osu.edu

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
