  • Application Scientist NGS at MPI of Biochemistry, Munich, Germany

The Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried - near Munich- is one of the leading institutes in the molecular life sciences, with about 30 groups conducting cutting-edge basic research in biochemistry, cell- and structural biology and biomedicine. The institute houses state-of-the-art facilities and has a lively, highly international atmosphere.

The institute’s Biochemistry Core Facility offers scientific services such as NGS, mass spectrometry, recombinant protein production, peptide chemistry as well as biophysical methods. We are inviting applications for a position as

    Application Scientist, Next-Generation-Sequencing (NGS)

You will be operating and developing our NGS service, with a focus primarily on library preparation for CHIP-Seq and RNA-Seq. You will be discussing experiment design and experimental results with the users from the scientific departments and will oversee sample preparation by one technician. You will also analyse and distribute data, in close collaboration with the bioinformatics service group. You will be expected to stay abreast of changing technology, including equipment and protocols.

You hold a Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology or another relevant scientific discipline and have experience in Next-Generation Sequencing technology, in particular, in library preparation. Previous exposure to automation/liquid handling and bioinformatics and its application to NGS data would be considered beneficial. Key selection criteria will be a high level of initiative and excellent communication skills when interacting with end users.

You will act as the customers’ primary contact to this service, in an international environment. We are thus looking for an autonomous, open-minded self-starter, ideally with previous supervising experience.

Remuneration will be based on qualifications and the salary structure of the TVöD (public service tariff scale). The initial contract is limited to two years.

The Max Planck Society is committed to promoting and developing equality of opportunity in all areas of its work. Therefore we encourage applications from women and minorities and all other interested and qualified people.

For further information about the MPIB, please visit www.biochem.mpg.de. Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr. Stephan Uebel ([email protected]).

Please send your application including a CV by e-mail to [email protected], quoting reference number 04.17. The deadline for application is February 24, 2017.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
