  • Senior Software Engineer, Oxford Nanopore Technologies

    To apply visit http://www.nanoporetech.com/vacancies

As a Senior Software engineer, you will be a member of the Informatics Department, focused on developing analysis and control software and other peripherals associated with the DNA sequencing platform. You will drive all aspects of software quality, particularly reliability, efficiency, utility and maintainability for both new and existing software.

Oxford Nanopore is developing a nanopore-based technology platform for direct electrical DNA analysis. The Company has recently raised significant funds to accelerate the development of this technology. The multidisciplinary team at Oxford Nanopore includes specialists in molecular biology, electrophysiology, fluidics and materials engineering, electronic systems engineering, and informatics.

Our overall development approach is agile, and this is particularly evident in the informatics team where we practice agile software development methodologies. A combination of individual technical excellence and ability to work within a team is therefore essential for this role.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    * Design and develop control and analysis software for our DNA sequencing platform
    * Work closely with the informatics team developing new methods and algorithms
    * Mentor other software developers and lead small projects
    * Contribute to designs for both embedded systems and off-instrument analysis
    * Build strong collaborations with the hardware engineering team
    * Interface with internal and external customers to define project requirements
    * Identify, evaluate and enable new technologies and capabilities

    Required skills and background:

    * 5 years of C++/STL/boost development experience
    * At least a degree in computer sciences or related discipline
    * Experience working with agile software development methodologies (SCRUM, TDD)
    * Proven ability to quickly learn and adapt in a biotechnology environment
    * Demonstrate a strong understanding of the software development life cycle
    * Clear communication and strong interpersonal skills

    Beneficial:

    * Team oriented, self-motivated and ability to cope with change
    * Advanced degree or additional scientific training or related domain experience
    * Proven ability to work efficiently in a Linux/Windows environment
    * Additional languages, particularly Python, Perl, HTML and XML
    * Experience with JIRA, Eclipse, LabView, MySql or SGE

This is a hands-on technical position. No specific bioinformatics or biotechnology background is required.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
