The person hired will work under the supervision of Dr. Handley and in strong collaboration with Dr. Virgin conducting research involving analysis of the bacterial microbiome and virome with the aim of understanding basic mechanisms in which alterations of the microbiome associate with or cause disease, identification of novel disease associated pathogens, and development of ecological theory pertaining to host-associated bacterial and viral communities.

Candidates will have ample opportunities to acquire and develop new skills, work closely with the PI and collaborators, and communicate results to the scientific community through conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications while working in a supportive, highly collaborative, and energetic environment. State-of-the-art facilities are available within an exceptionally energetic research setting.

Research projects will involve developing appropriate sequencing approaches and strategies to quantitatively assess mixed microbial communities as well as extensive involvement in the development and application of computational workflows to analyze diverse microbial communities. Successful applicants will have a strong background in molecular biology, bioinformatics and ecological statistics.

    Job Duties:
Under the direction of the principal investigator, the applicant will independently carry out activities performing laboratory research. Duties include:
    • Guide research projects through experimental design, conduct of experiments, and analysis of data

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
