The Columbia University Sulzberger Genome Center is seeking an Associate Research Scientist for its Next-Generation Sequencing Laboratory. The Next-Generation Sequencing Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art high-throughput sequencing instruments. It has extensive collaborations with investigators at Columbia University for studying fundamental problems in biology, translational medicine and cancer genomics.
The successful applicant will thrive at the interface between biology, translational medicine and computational genomics. She or he would be expected to be involved in all aspects of computational analysis for a wide range of research projects using next-generation sequencing, including whole genome or exome resequencing, ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, epigenomics, de novo genome assembly, CLIP-seq, microRNA expression and short-RNA profiling and discovery.
The ideal candidate will have programming skills to create sequence analysis pipelines, extend existing tools, integrate additional tools in the analysis pipeline, and develop new tools as required by the project. The candidate will be expected to work with scientists to understand project requirements and to provide both experiment design and data analysis advice. The candidate may also work with programming staffs in designing and implementing larger scale solutions for specific projects.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in computational biology or related quantitative sciences. Working knowledge of bioinformatics tools. Demonstrated experience in problem solving. Excellent communication skills. Experience with deep sequencing data is a plus. The rank and salary of the position will be competitive based on qualifications.
Programming skills: Fluency with at least one general-purpose programming language (such as C/C++, Ruby, Perl, Python, or Java), and one language for scientific computing (such as R or Matlab). Experience with source code version control systems.
