I know it seems like a silly question to ask, but Google has no answer for me, nor do the papers published by Phil Green and Brent Ewing themselves. The wikipedia article on the matter is very helpful for understanding it, yet provides no explanation for this betwixting acronym.
Could it be PHRED is not an acronym? Thank you, Alex |

Given that Phred is not capitalised, it is unlikely to be an acronym.

What does PHRED stand for? PHRED stands for Phil's Read Editor (University of Washington Genome Center) https://books.google.com/books?id=Q9...0phred&f=false Last edited by Richard Finney; 06-06-2015 at 02:05 PM. |

I guess human review of problem spots ̶w̶a̶s̶ is important.

"phred" is in no sense an "editor". I'm sure it is just a dopey play on words: past tense of "read" is pronounced "red". Program written by Phil Green. "Ph" + "red" = "Phred". It's like "Fred", but spelled with a "Ph". Ha ha ha. -- Phillip |
