  • Staff Scientist/Technician, Cancer genomics/Cancer evolution, Weill Cornell, NYC

    Positions available for a research technician and a lab manager at the Landau lab, Weill Cornell Medical College/ NY Genome Center.

    The lab develops computational and experimental tools to study cancer evolution. Our research is geared towards uncovering basic principles in evolutionary biology, using both patient derived samples and experimental systems for modeling cancer evolution. In addition, we seek to apply this knowledge to designing the next generation of precision medicine tools to overcome cancer evolution, as a central challenge to cancer cure today. More information to be found at landaulab.org

    Position Description
    We are looking for a highly motivated, independent but team-oriented scientists with strong expertise in molecular biology/genomics experimental methods (e.g., ChIP-seq, library construction, viral transduction) and desire to learn and grow in the field of Genome Technology.

    Job Duties:
    • Organize and maintain a high functioning genomics laboratory;
    • Devise and direct genetic research projects aimed at understanding the basic principles of cancer evolution using next generation sequencing (genome, exome, etc) and other high throughput methods;
    • Design and execute experiments with cell lines with the CAS9/CRISPR system to develop in vitro and in vivo models of cancer evolution;
    • Carry out procedures associated with DNA sequencing on the Illumina sequencing platform, including DNA library preparation, sample quantification & preparation, and sequencer operation;
    • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team combining clinical study coordinators, bioinformaticians, laboratory scientists, and postdoctoral research fellows to understand the basis of cancer evolution;
    • Contribute to writing of project proposals, manuscripts and grants.

    Position Requirements:
    • Strong knowledge in experimental biology and genetics
    • Demonstrated contributions to original research project development ideas and implementation.
    • Good general laboratory and organizational skills, including the ability to work independently and efficiently;
    • Ability to multitask is a must, along with an orientation toward teamwork and cooperation;
    • Strong creative thinking and problem solving skills;
    • Excellent communication skills required.

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

    Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
