  • PhD position in Systems Biology of Inflammation

The research group “Medical Systems Biology” at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (Kiel, Germany) seeks for a motivated PhD.

Your role: Supporting our interdisciplinary research group, you will be responsible for the analysis of large-scale experimental data sets (transcriptome and microbiome) with the aim to identify key pathways regulating inflammatory phenotypes across different organs and involved in host-microbiome interactions.

Your profile: This position requires a degree in bioinformatics, systems biology, molecular biology or a related field and excellent programming skills (R, Perl, Python, C/C++ or Java). We also expect knowledge of Linux systems, ideally with previous experience in the analysis of next-generation sequencing data, statistics and constraint-based metabolic modeling as well as strong (English) communication skills.

We offer: We offer an excellent research environment at the University Medical Center Kiel. Kiel is a vibrant, family-friendly city with beautiful beaches right at the shores of the Baltic Sea.

Job details: This is a fixed-term position (available from 1 May 2017) ending in December 2018 (funding period of the excellence cluster) with possible extension to a total of three years. Employer: The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe with more than 80 clinics and institutes. It offers outstanding medical treatment and excellence in research and education with nearly 12,500 employees, 2,470 patient beds and more than 100,000 hospitalized patients, 240,000 outpatient cases and in excess of 3,000 births a year. We provide top research at the interface of medicine, science and technology and maintain research co-operations with universities all over the world. As part of the excellence cluster “Inflammation at Interfaces”, the research group “Medical Systems Biology” at the Institute of Experimental Medicine focuses on the hypothesis-driven analysis of high-throughput experimental data sets in the context of aging, inflammation and computational microbiology.

Application: Please submit your application via our online portal: www.uksh.de/Bewerbung.html?nr=20170311. Please include the reference number 20170311 as well as information about your earliest possible starting date. We are looking forward to your application.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
