  • Bioinformatics analyst at the University of Virginia

    Visit http://jobs.virginia.edu/applicants/...uickFind=83906 to apply.

The Bioinformatics Core in the UVa School of Medicine seeks a Bioinformatics Analyst. The analyst will work closely with the core director and other staff to assist in experimental design and provide expert consultation, technical, and scientific support for UVA investigators, and assist in outreach and training activities. The analyst will identify opportunities and implement solutions for managing, visualizing, analyzing, and interpreting genomic data using high-throughput sequencing data in human, model organisms, and microorganisms. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to translate biological questions into technical designs, and to identify, prioritize, and execute bioinformatics tasks to meet project goals and deadlines. The analyst will participate in meetings and consultations with clients to discuss design and interpretation, and will assist in manuscript and grant preparation.

Qualified candidates must have at least a Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Genomics, Biostatistics, or related field. In addition, qualified candidates will have at least five years of experience collaborating with research scientists in performing bioinformatics/genomics data analysis. PhD and three years collaborative experience beyond postdoc can substitute for years of experience.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong knowledge of working in a Unix/Linux environment and experience with high-performance computing.
    • Advanced proficiency with R/Bioconductor, RMarkdown, and the "tidyverse" tools for data analysis.
    • Proficiency with Python, Perl, or another scripting language.
    • Experience with open-source software, tools, and databases for analyzing next-generation sequencing data (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, DNA variation, epigenetics, microbiome, and metagenomics).
    • The analyst will work in an interdisciplinary environment to document workflows, consult with and communicate results to researchers who are not necessarily trained in bioinformatics, and contribute to grant and manuscript preparation; excellent written and oral communication skills are thus essential.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
