Default Bioinformatics Scientist – Hayward #1570

Why is one person more likely to develop a disease—like cancer, diabetes or Parkinson’s—than someone else? Why would one person respond differently to treatment than another? Illumina’s technologies are helping researchers around the world to answer these questions and others, on a scale not even possible a few years ago.

Illumina is the only life sciences company developing genome-wide technologies for genotyping, gene expression and sequencing—the three cornerstones of modern genetic analysis. By enabling studies of thousands of patient samples at once, our products set genetic discovery on fast forward. And we’re just getting started.

Bioinformatics Scientist – Hayward #1570

Job Summary:
Work on complex bioinformatics analysis algorithms for secondary data analysis of next generation sequencing technology. Algorithms include basecalling and signal processing, mapping, assembly, abundance and load estimation. You will be responsible for defining, creating, developing, implementing, and unit testing these methods. You will work with very large data sets and will be responsible for the computational and integration aspects of the developed algorithms.

Job duties include but are not limited to:
• Work in a cross-functional group of software developers, bioinformaticians, hardware engineers, and molecular biologists, developing next generation state of the art genome analysis systems
• Help define and develop algorithms and workflows for sequence analysis for applications including medical resequencing, metagenomics and others
• Work with very large data sets from current and new Illumina platforms to solve complex problems of analytical, computational and integration nature
• Provide methods, prototypes and code for implementation in internal tools and end-user applications
• Provide validation and R&D application support services.
• Participate in cross-site projects and academic collaborations

Education and Experience:
• M.S. in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or similar. Ph. D. degree with relevant experience strongly preferred
• 3+ years of relevant experience
• Must demonstrate experience developing algorithms for sequence analysis in complex genomics applications. Previous experience in similar domains is a plus
• Proficient with standard bioinformatics and analysis tools and packages, including Perl, Python, R, Matlab, Biconductor or similar
• Experience with C/C++ required, C# - desired. Experience developing libraries and modules desired
• Superior communication skills in highly diverse cross-discipline environment
