  • Bioinformatics Expert Next Generation Sequencing

The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) is a joint interdisciplinary
research and training center of the ETH Zurich (ETH) and the University of
Zurich (UZH). We are seeking to fill the following position:

    Bioinformatics Expert Next Generation Sequencing

to strengthen the bioinformatics team by facilitating and supporting the
analysis of ultra-high throughput sequencing data generated in the various
research projects. The successful candidate will be involved in managing and
processing large-scale DNA sequencing data generated by Roche/454 and
ABI SOLiD technologies. In addition, the expert will also participate in building
customized data analysis pipelines and in the scientific development of new
approaches for large-scale sequence data analysis.

The ideal candidate has a university degree in computer science,
bioinformatics or a related field. Candidates with a PhD and publications are
welcome to apply. Familiarity with the management and analysis of largescale
genomics datasets will be considered an advantage. In particular
experience with sequencing data (e.g. Illumina/454/SOLiD/Sanger based
sequence-assembly or -mapping) or other functional genomics data (e.g.
microarray data, ChIP data) will be a plus. Basic skills with the LINUX/UNIX
operating system are essential. Furthermore, a strong background in at least
one scripting or programming language (Perl, Python, Java, C++) is
mandatory. Experience in R/Bioconductor and/or web programming will be
    considered an advantage.

The ability to work independently is a prerequisite, as is the ability to
effectively interact with the research and technical staff of the center and of
external research groups in a team-oriented manner. Advanced knowledge of
English is essential, as this is the working language of the center. Knowledge
of German is helpful but not essential.

Interested candidates should send a full CV, including a list of publications
and the names of at least two referees until March 31, 2009 to

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
