  • Bioinformatician @ Heidelberg University Hospital

The Multiple Myeloma Research Laboratory (Dr. Dirk Hose) of the Multiple Myeloma Section (Prof. Dr. Hartmut Goldschmidt), Department of Internal Medicine V and National Center for Tumor Diseases at the Heidelberg University Hospital, in cooperation with the Computational biology and genomics group (Dr. Wolfgang Huber) at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) invites applications for the position of a

    Bioinformatician (f/m)
    (full-time)

The position is initially limited to one year, extension envisaged. We provide the opportunity to obtain a doctorate degree.

The Multiple Myeloma Research Laboratory focusses on the development of prognostic factors and novel therapeutics in the treatment of multiple myeloma, a malignant plasma cell disease which is still rarely curable. Dr. Huber’s group works on the development of statistical and bioinformatics methods in genomic analysis.

    Your responsibilities:
    • Analysis of high-throughput sequencing data (RNA, whole genome, whole exome)
    • Analysis of gene expression data (microarrays)
    • Development of a software allowing the generation of a clinically applicable report based on RNA-sequencing data analogous to our GEP-R (cf. Meißner et al., Clinical Cancer Research, 2011), within a BMBF funded project

    Your profile:
    • University degree in natural sciences, mathematics or information technology
    • Excellent knowledge of bioinformatics, especially in expression and high-throughput sequencing data analysis, and statistics (including R and Bioconductor)
    • Strong background in web development and client/server architectures
    • Interest in scientific issues
    • Fluent in written and spoken German and English
    • Ability to work both independently as well as in a team
    • High degree of commitment and flexibility

Payment and social benefits will be in accordance with the regulations of the German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees).

Applications (in electronic form only) should be sent within four weeks to:

    Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg
    Medizinische Klinik V
Dr. med. Dipl. Phys. D. Hose
    Im Neuenheimer Feld 410
    69120 Heidelberg
E-Mail: [email protected] (Dr. med. A. Seckinger)

We stand for equal opportunity for women and man. Severely handicapped with the same eligibility will be given priority.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
