  • Two Bioinformatics Postdoc Positions at Yale

Laboratory of Nenad Sestan, Department of Neurobiology, Yale University, New Haven, CT.

    General Features:
Sestan lab is seeking two highly motivated and talented Bioinformatics scientist to add to our group to explore our massive human and non-human primate brain datasets. Research in our lab investigates how neurons acquire distinct identities and form precise connections in the developing cerebral cortex, the part of the brain involved in a variety of higher cognitive, emotional, sensory, and motor functions. We also study how these developmental processes have changed during evolution and in human disorders. Currently we have produced immense biological data using high-throughput methods like RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, genome re-sequencing, exon-array and DNA-methylation array from post-mortem brain tissues, single cells and iPS cells. Much more data will be produced in near future. We are seeking talented bioinformatics scientists to join our data analysis group to explore this unprecedented data resource, to reveal the mystery of brain development and evolution. More information online: http://medicine.yale.edu/labs/sestan; http://www.brainspan.org.

    Background:
The successful candidate will join our multidisciplinary research team as a computational researcher. The data analysis entails assessing data quality, discovering biological patterns, answering essential biological questions, visualizing and presenting results.

    Essential Requirements:
    • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related discipline.
    • Strong programming skills (Perl, Python, R; and working on Linux systems).
    • Knowledge and experience in statistics.
    • Independent problem solving skills.
    • Good communication skills, and a strong team-work spirit with self-learning abilities.
    • 2+ years of experience in Bioinformatics data analysis tools and databases.

    Desirable:
Experience in analyzing RNA-Seq and ChIP-Seq data is essential.
Research experience related with gene regulation or brain will be a plus.

    To Apply:
Submit a CV and cover letter stating research interests and contact details of three referees in a single pdf file to [email protected]. Please indicate “[Bioinfo_Postdoc]” in the subject line.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
